Revive a Sunnah: The Turban

By: Sheikhul Hadith Hadhrat Moulana Fadhlur Rahman Saheb

One must affirm that there can be absolutely no doubt in the fact that each and every Sunnah of our beloved Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is considered supreme and well worthy of emulation by a true believer of and follower of his esteemed lifestyle. In fact a true lover of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would be prepared to give his life for the practical preservation of even one Sunnah. A true Ummati of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is one who endeavors to emulate every Sunnah, whether it is connected to the Ibaadat (worship) of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or his habit or lifestyle (the manner of his eating, walking, dressing etc.)

Importance of the Sunnat

Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “He who holds firm to my Sunnah when corruption is rampant in my Ummah will attain the reward of a hundred martyrs.” (al-Bayhaqi )

In another Hadith, Sayyiduna Anas Radhiyallaahu Anhu reports that Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam advised, “Whoever cherishes my Sunnah, indeed he cherishes me and whoever loves me will be with me in Jannah.” (Tirmidhi)

The 11th ZilHijja the Fourth Day of Hajj

Out of Wajibat of Hajj now there remained only a few practices. You are to stay at Mina for to or three days and to perform Rami on all the three Jamarat. To spend the nights of these days as well in Mina is Sunnat-e-Mu’akkada while according to some others it is Wajib. It is forbidden to spend the nights anywhere out-side Mina whether in Makkah or anywhere else (Irshad-us-Sari).

Sai Of hajj

Sai Between Safa And Marwah
Safa and Marwa are two hills in the neighbourhood of Masjid-ul-Haram. The literal meaning of Sa’i is to run. In the terminology of Shari’at (Islamic Law) to make seven rounds between Safa and Marwah, in a particular way, is called Sa’i. It is observed as a memorial of a particular action of Hazrat Isma’il (peace be upon them). This Sa’i is ‘Wajib’ both in ‘Hajj’ and Umra.

The First Day – The 8th ZilHijja

Today, after sunrise, all the pilgrims are to go to Mina in the state of Ihram. Mufrid whose Ihram is for Hajj only and Qarin whose Ihram is for Hajj and Umra collectively, both are already with Ihram. The Mutamatte who had taken off his Ihram after Umra as well as the inhabitants of Haram will today wear Ihram at first. They should take a bath in accordance with Sunnat and should come in Masjid-e-Haram after wearing Ihram. It is Mustahab for them to perform a Tawaf. After saying two Rak’ats of Tawaf they should say two more Rak’ats for Ihram. Then they should make up their mind for Hajj in this way :

Idhtiba And Ramal During Tawaf

The practices of Tawaf so far mentioned are equally necessary for the observers of every kind of Tawaf, whether it may be a Tawaf of Umra or a Tawaf of Hajj and similarly its observer may be a Mufrid or a Qarin or a Mutamatte. It may be a Wajib Tawaf or ‘Sunnat’ or ‘Nafl’. But the Tawaf wherein you have to observe Sa’i between Safa and Marwah requires you to perform two more practices :-

MASAAIL (RULES) PERTAINING TO I’TIKAF

(1) The same rules which apply to a man observing I’tikaf in the Musjid, apply to a woman observing I’tikaf in her place of seclusion at home.

(2) When necessity, e.g. Juma’h Salat in another Musjid, compels the Mu’takif to leave his Musjid, it will be permissible for him to enquire about a sick person or generally engage in good conversation without departing from the road. He must not unnecessarily stop on the road.

(3) During I’tikaf it is not permissible to leave the Musjid for even a Sunnat ghusl.

VALID REASONS FOR LEAVING THE MUSJID AND WHICH WILL NOT BREAK THE I’TIKAF

It is permissible to leave the Musjid for the following acts of need:

(1) To answer the call of nature – to go to the toilet.

(2) To pass wind.

(3) To take an obligatory bath.

(4) To make wudhu.

(5) Juma’h Salat, if Juma’h Salat is not performed in the Musjid where the I’tikaf is being observed. In this case the Mu’takif should leave the Musjid at such a time to enable him to reach the other Musjid in time to perform his Sunnat Salat. He should leave immediately after having completed the six raka’ts Sunnats after the Fardh Salat. He should not delay for Dua and Thikr.
