Why do we say Alhamdulillah after sneezing?

The narrations of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) encourage us to say “Alhamdulillah” when we sneeze.

“Alhamdulillah” means “All praise is due to Allah”. A rightfully curious mind will wonder why are we supposed to express our gratitude to Allah for the insignificant act of sneezing. On the contrary, sneezing is no insignificant reaction of the body. Sneezing is a great blessing from Allah where various muscle groups come in to play. The muscles of the stomach, chest, neck and eyes are used for this seemingly insignificant reaction of the body.

Some of the reasons for saying “Alhamdulillah” are as follows:

Hadith Number Nine

Hazrat Jaabir R.A. says I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘zamzam is a cure for any purpose for which it is being drunk’.

Another Hadith states: ‘If you drink it to quench a thirst, it will do so, and if you drink it to fill stomach in place of food, it will do so, and if you drink it for a cure from some illness, it will do so. This is the service of Hazrat Jibraeel A.S. and it is the way of Hazrat Ismail A.S. (Ithaaf)

Few noble habits about eating

Hadrat Asma (Radi Allaahu Ta’ala Anha) narrated that whenever hot food was brought to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) he would keep it covered until the force of its steam had gone and used to say that there is great blessing in cold food. [Darim, Madarij-un-Nabuwah]

Hadrat Anas (Radi Allaahu Ta’ala Anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, “When food is set down, take off your sandals, for it gives more rest to your feet. [Ibn-e-Majah, Mishkat]

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) did not drink water after taking meals as it affects digestion adversely. One should not drink water until the food is nearly digested. [Madarij-un-Nabuwah]

MASAIL PERTAINING TO SAUM

(1) The thawab and spiritual benefits of saum are eliminated by commission of sin during the state of fasting.

(2) Fasting acts as a protecting shield for the Sa-im (fasting person) as long as he does not destroy his Saum with sin.

(3) Among the sins which destroy the benefits of Saum, the worst is Gheebat (to speak ill of others in their absence), Gheebat also produces physical weakness during Saum. The fast thus becomes very difficult to observe.

(4) Indulgence in futile acts, nonsensical and idle conversation are also negatory of the benefits of Saum.

THINGS WHICH DO NOT BREAK THE FAST

1) Eating, drinking or indulging in sexual relations forgetfully. This means that at the time of committing these acts, one does not remember the fast. However, if one continues even momentarily after recalling the fast, the Saum will be nullified.

(2) Applying eye-drops.

(3) Water entering the ears.

(4) Vomiting, no matter how much. This refers to vomiting which is not self-induced. For the rule regarding self-induced vomiting, (see above no. 10).

(5) Smoke, which is inhaled unintentionally, not by one’s volition or conscious action.

Acts which Break or do not Break the Fast

  1. If a fasting person forgetfully eats, drinks or has sexual intercourse, the fast will not break. If he eats and drinks a full-stomach, even then the fast will not break. If he forgetfully eats or drinks several times in the day, the fast will still not break.

  2. A person saw a fasting person eating or drinking something. If this fasting person is quite strong and is not greatly affected by fasting, it will be wâjib to remind him that he is fasting. But if he is a weak person and is greatly affected by fasting, he should not be reminded that he is fasting. Instead, he should be allowed to continue eating.

THE PREREQUISITES OF SALAAT

THE PREREQUISITES OF SALAAT

1. Before commencing with salaat, several things are wajib. If one does not
have wudu, then wudu should be made. If there is a need to have a bath, then a
bath should be taken. If there is any impurity on the body or clothes, it should
be purified. The place where salaat is being offered should also be pure. Apart
from the face, hands and feet, the entire body from head to toe should be well
covered. One should face the qiblah. An intention should be made for the salaat
which one wishes to offer. The salaat should be offered after the entry of that
salaat time. All these are prerequisites or conditions for salaat. If any one of
these prerequisites are not found, salaat will not be valid.
