Revive a Sunnah: The Turban

By: Sheikhul Hadith Hadhrat Moulana Fadhlur Rahman Saheb

One must affirm that there can be absolutely no doubt in the fact that each and every Sunnah of our beloved Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is considered supreme and well worthy of emulation by a true believer of and follower of his esteemed lifestyle. In fact a true lover of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would be prepared to give his life for the practical preservation of even one Sunnah. A true Ummati of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is one who endeavors to emulate every Sunnah, whether it is connected to the Ibaadat (worship) of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or his habit or lifestyle (the manner of his eating, walking, dressing etc.)

Zakah On Diamonds

Q. In your June 1990 issue you mention on page 19: “Zakah is not liable on diamonds, immaterial of how high their value may reach”.Diamonds are an expensive marketable commodity like any other valuable item, regardless of whether they are used in making jewellery or retained as investment. They bring a fairly high capital gain. When gold in any from is subject to Zakah as is value of any other item held for long or short term investment and business purposes. Why should the value of diamond be exempt? Muhammad Hasan Chand Clifton, Karachi.

A. If diamonds or precious stone are purchased for trading purpose, i.e. with a clear intention of their resale, they are certainly subject to Zakah like any other item purchased with the same intention. But if a diamond or a precious stone is kept for personal use only, in that case Zakah is not obligatory on its value.

Zakah On Agricultural Produce

Q. “There is no need to pay zakah on salary unless there is a saving left for a period of one year, whereas 10% of the farm produce is payable based on the current value of the produce irrespective of whether produce is sold or not. The Zakah in such circumstances is paid upfront whereas the salary earner has the liberty of choosing how to use his earnings without having to deduct a certain portion first for zakah. It means that if he chooses to spend all his earning then there is no need to pay zakah. Would it not be a dis-incentive to the farmer as compared with the salary earner? Perhaps you can clarify this further”.

Lecture 8. Practice Based on the Teachings of Prophet Muhammad

Dear friends! Today’s talk marks the end of our month-long meetings. As you know, it is the eighth meeting of this series. I had intended to present to you at least the essential aspects of Islam in my last two speeches but it seems that a lot more time is needed to do justice to the subject. However, to sum up let us return to the basics of which the first principle is the Oneness of God.

Aayat Number Two

“And spend of your substance in the way of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction.”

Some of the commentators of the Holy Qur’an are unanimous that this verse refers to the pilgrimage among other things pertaining to the obligations and duties we owe to Allah. This verse encourages to spend in Allah’s way; to spend in Hajj and warns that refusal to spend that which Allah given in His own path means destroying your own self with your own hands. There can be no doubt in this.

On Proceeding To Journey

(1) A ‘Hajj’ pilgrim should get his faults excused by his friends and relatives at the time of taking their leave and request them to pray for his well being. When he intends to get out of his house, he should offer two ‘Rak’at of Nafl prayers. On getting near the exit of his house he should recite Surah Inna Anzalna. (ch.97).

When he comes out he should give whatever he can afford as charity and should recite ‘Ayat-ul-Kursi’.

Thereafter he should pray to Allah in these words :-

14) Lying About The Prophet (pbuh)

Allah, the Most High, says,

“On the Day of Judgement will thou see those who told lies against Allah; their faces will be turned black: is there not in Hell an abode for the Haughty?” (Az-Zummar: 60)

Al-Hasan said commenting on this ayah that: they are those who say, if we want to do something we do it but if we do not want to do it we do not.
