SHUROOT (CONDITIONS)

Fiqh, Kitaab us Salaat / Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

THE FOLLOWING ARE OUTSIDE FACTORS, WHICH AFFECT THE CORRECTNESS OF ANY SALAAT.

IF THESE FACTORS ARE NOT IN PLACE BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE SALAAT THEN YOUR SALAAT WILL NOT BE VALID AND YOU WILL HAVE TO REPEAT YOUR PRAYER!!!!!!!!!!

CLEANLINESS

Your body must be clean and your clothes must be clean and free of najas. Meaning you must both be in wudhu and there must be no physical signs of impurity on your body or your clothes. In addition the place that you will be praying on must be free of najas. If the entire area is not free of najas then at least the place where your hands, face, knees and feet will touch must be clean.

COVERING THE SHAMEFUL PARTS

Your aurat must be covered. For men this is the part of the body starting at the knees and ending just below the navel.

For women the entire body is aurat and must be covered except for the hands face and feet.

QIBLAH

You must face the qiblah. If you cannot determine where is the qiblah you must ask someone. If there is no way to know where is the qiblah then you must guess in your mind. This will be enough. Then pray in the direction you think it might be.

TIME

You must pray when the salaat time comes in and not before time. If the time has not arrived then the salaat will not be accepted

INTENTION

You must make intention of all fard and wajib salaats. Not a general intention but a specified one. For example: I intend to pray the asr namaz. If it is a nafil namaz then a general intention like: I intend to pray or I intend to pray four rakats. This will be enough. If you are praying in jamaat you must also make intention to pray behind the imam. You don’t have to mention the imam’s name just say: I intend to pray asr namaz behind this imam. This will be enough.

TAHRIMAH

This is the saying of Allahu Akbar while in the standing position. There should be no delay from the time you make your intention until you say the tahrima. After saying the tahrimah there will be no talking, eating, or any extra movements after this.
