Questions on Jihad and Shahadah

Q. We hear a lot of talk about Jihad these days, like the Afghanistan Jihad, the Kashmir Jihad. Then, we have the proliferation of shaheeds in our society with political parties and activist groups claiming shahadah for those dead from among their ranks. All this is very confusing. We seem to have lost the yard-stick which could help us distinguish between Jihad or bilateral hostility, shahadah or natural or crime-oriented death and straight self-ruination. Please help us with your advice.

A. The first subject requires a larger frame of discussion where we have to determine what becomes Jihad, and when, and what conditions are binding therein. It is difficult to cover all these aspects within the scope of the occasion we have here. The best course is to isolate the inquiry to a particular case of Jihad and try to find out whether or not it is Jihad. As for Shahadah, the rule is that one who lays down his life fighting in the way of Allah is a Shaheed. Then, anyone killed ‘zulman’ or unjustly is a shaheed. But, here are two Muslims fighting each other for no reason whatsoever or for the wrong reason, while one of them kills the other, that is, for no reason, then, as the hadith rules, the killer deserves Hell and so does the killed. Both must go to Hell because the one killed, had he managed to lay his hands on the killer, he would have been the one to have killed his killer

Q. Let us take the case of Jihad in Afghanistan. So many Muslims were killed there in genocide style, by the invading armies of Russia. Then, the long stiff resistance made them withdraw and in their wake came America with all sorts of game plans. They are still playing… .

The Meaning Of Shaheed

Q. The word ‘Shaheed’ has been frequently used in the books, newspapers and magazines for different type of people. I am sure that this word should have a specific connotation in the Islamic terminology. I will be grateful if you please explain the true meaning of this word and the categories of persons for whom this terms may be applied in Shari’ah.

A. In fact ‘Shaheed’, is a specific term, used in the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah. It has certainly a specific meaning and one should be careful before applying this term to a person and you should ascertain whether hi is really qualified to be called a Shaheed.

Ghazi Anwar Pasha’s Last Letter to his wife

Ghazi Anwar Pasha was from amongst those great Mujahideen of Turkey who had spent all his life fighting against the enemies of Islam. Eventually he was martyred by the Russians. Only a day prior to this he sent a letter to his wife, Najiya Sultana. This letter was published by her in the Turkish newspapers, and after being transferred was published by her in the newspapers in India on the 22 April 1923.

This letter is so touching and thought provoking that every young man should read it. An inspiring account of Mujahideen from the Ottaman period.

Jihad by Night

“For twenty years I waged Jihad against myself.  I struggled, all throughout to remain standing in prayer at night.  For those twenty years I never tasted the sweetness of the night prayer.  It was only after that that I found comfort and sweetness.”

These are the words of one of the greatest scholars of the early generation.  Al-Imam Sufyaan ath-Thawri (161 H) is known as one of the Eight Ascetics of his age.  He was, rahimahullah, ‘aabid – a worshipper.

Twenty years of Jihad by night.  No sweetness was experienced by ath-Thawri (rahimahullah) for twenty years?

Financing the Jihad Part 3

The presentation in these booklets ought to be dignified and ought not to contain such tones and substances that are contrary to the spirit of the Jihad. As every Mujahid knows, that all the treasures of the world and heavens belong to Allah Ta`ala only and Allah Ta`ala alone will provide each and every need of the Mujahideen. But according to the Revered Sharee`ah of Islam, the Mujahideen are obliged to propagate the virtues of spending in the Jihad, as pronounced in the Holy Quraan and the Revered Sunnah. Once these pronouncement are delivered to the Muslims, then they have fulfilled their duty and after which the Muslims ought to be left to their own decisions. If some Muslims do not wish to participate in spending for the Jihad, then to knock on their door would be an insult to the Mujahideen, as they are appealing for financial help only for the Victory of Islam.

Financing the Jihad Part 2

The drive for funds ought not to be pursued with undignified and devious means. Such abominable practices will harm the reputation of the Jihad and the Mujahideen enormously and such a practice would be counterproductive.

The definition of dignity could not be rigidly defined. Thus it should be left to different areas, to use the dignified means according to their own environment and circumstances. Some devotees of Allah Ta`ala are so pious and generous that they consider such fund raising efforts in the Path of Allah Ta`ala, with great respect and gratitude. To knock on such people’s door could not be defined as “undignified”. Allah’s Last Rasool SallalLahu-`alayhi Wasallam himself has announced for the contribution to the Jihad resources, in the Masjid ul Nabawi and Allah’s Last Rasool SallalLahu-`alayhi Wasallam has also spread the sheet on the ground.

Financing the Jihad Part 1

The virtues of providing financial support to the Mujahideen abounds in the Holy Quraan and the Revered Sunnah. And the virtues of spending in the Jihad and the Thawab of such spending and the admonition for those who do not participate in such a virtuous deed, also abound in the Holy Quraan and the Revered Sunnah.

The need for financial resources is as important in the Jihad as for the need for manpower. Therefore the Jihad organisations ought to establish a substantial and sound Financial Department, taking into full account the prevailing situation.

Hazrat Zarrar and Hazrat Khaula (RA)

During the Battle of Bait Lihya, the Muslim Commander Zarrar(ra) was captured by the Byzantine forces. Word was sent to Khalid Bin Walid (ra) for further help.

Leaving the command of Damacus to Abu Ubaida (ra), Khalid( ra) set off to Bait Lihya with his mobile contingent of 4000 horsemen. As Khalid(ra ) approached the battle-field, he saw a muslim rider with a masked face gallop of towards the Byzantine front. This warrior would kill a number of the enemy soldiers, and then withdraw. He would after some time pounce on the enemy again and kill everyone who came his way. He was striking fear in the ranks of the enemy soldiers.

Anti-Islamic policies of India Part 03

After the division of the Muslimun into four separate entities and countries, the Muslimun have lost their unity and strength. These four countries are far apart and there is no cohesion amongst them. The Muslimun of Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Kashmir are strangers to each other and are the victims of the Indian conspiracy. Kashmir has been proclaimed by India as her integral part. The existence and progress of Pakistan is a thorn in the eyes of India. India is hell bent to make Bangladesh her own colony, while the Indian Muslimun are the most oppressed human beings. And the voices of their protests are silenced by the chants of ‘our internal affairs’. It means that Muslimun of India are dying yet they cannot scream. Their lives and Imaan, both are under threat but no help or friends are to be found all around.

Anti-Islamic policies of India Part 02

In addition to the above-mentioned facts, India has introduced for many years, a blind and the most draconian law called Tada, under this anti humane law, sixty thousand Muslimun were put behind bars, without any trial or recourse to the courts. Under this despicable law, prominent and distinguished figures and pious, holy learned men of Islam were thrown into the jails, where they are still awaiting their fate. They have not been allowed any bail applications, nor have they been allowed to retract their confessions, which were obtained under torture by the police. The police have been granted a carte blanche, to hold any one they like indefinitely, in their oppressive prison cells.
