40 Hadith

Akhlaq & Spirituality, Hadith & Seerah / Monday, August 18th, 2008

The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The one who learns and relates to others forty ahadith in the interest of the Deen and for the benefit of my Ummah, Allah Ta’ala will include him with the fuqaha and ulama on the Day of Judgment.”

This hadith has been narrated form Hazrat Zaban Ibn Jabal (ra), Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas (ra), Hazrat Abu Huraira (ra), Hazrat Anas (ra), Hazrat Abu Darda (ra), Hazrat Abu Saeed (ra), Harat Ali (ra), Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Masood (ra), Hazrat Abu Amama (ra), Hazrat Masood (ra), Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra), Hazrat Ibn Samra (ra), in different ahadith books with some minor differences.

Hazrat Abu Darda (ra) further narrates: “I will be an intercessor and witness for him.”

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Masood (ra) narrates that he will be asked to enter Jannah from the gate of his choice.

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra) has also added further that his name will be written in the class of ulama and he will be included with the shuhada.”

So it has been the practice of our ulama, fuqaha, and muhadditheen for many years to compile ahadith in groups of 40. This is because of the benefits that can be accrued based on the aforementioned hadith.

The author of this great work (Maulana Mufti Abdul-Hakeem Sakravi {ra}) said in the original introduction: Allah placed in the mind of this most unworthy slave and created a desire in my heart to write forty ahadith for the benefit of the Ummah.

Consequently my mind went toward a distinctive and unique characteristic of Hazrat Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ie. The juama-ul-qalam. I decided to extract the ahadiths of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) which are brief (according to the number of words) but comprehensive in meaning. So with this aspect in mind the following 40 ahadith have been collected. Now you will be able to see for yourself one of the miracles of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), how he strings the pearls in only two words and yet the sentence is a complete one.

It’s not difficult to learn these ahadith by heart. If only one hadith is learned daily, then even small children, grownups and the elderly can learn the entire 40 ahadith easily, thereby obtaining the rewards mentioned in the hadiths above. (End of the translation from the author in the original Urdu.)

We, the concerned ulema of Jamia Rasheed, and Masjid Ashara Mubashshara (block 13D/2 Gulshan Iqbal, Karachi), felt the need to have this valuable book translated into English and Pashto. There is a growing desire in the Ummah to search for deeni knowledge in this day and age. However the amount written in English and for English speaking people is not very much. To this end we have endeavored like the author to seek Allah’s pleasure by translating his work and making it available to the public at large.

We close with the original dua that the author closed his book with:

May Allah bestow us with ability, as no one can grant ability except Him. Ameen
